With the industrial revolution came the understanding for the need for an effective way of fighting fires. In the early days of the revolution, safety was not high on the priority list for employers and builders of factories and shops. The appliance needed to carry water to the scene quickly and be able to apply it effectively. Pumping the water through a hose allowed the water to be projected from a distance not afforded by throwing it from a bucket. Motorised vehicles meant more water could be carried and powered pumps meant that tall ladders could be carried, and larger quantities of water could be applied further and quicker. A great diversity of fire appliances have been and continue to be developed.
